I got involved with the Lutheran church for musical, not theological reasons. Theologically I consider myself a Unitarian. The Unitarian church (which I was involved with somewhat as a teenager - as a choir member) was the first place I was not made to feel uncomfortable about having one Jewish parent and one gentile parent. I joined a Unitarian church as an adult. That was where my voice was (re) discovered by a charismatic figure who changed my life forever. I was a featured soloist there and then - bang! - the choir director was fired and they did away with all the classical music. So after some false starts (Episcopalians were out, even though, as someone who always considered herself culturally British, that would have been the best fit - also a lot of Episcopalians these days are agnostics and that's considered ok - because they want their female choristers to sound like boy sopranos) I was directed toward the Lutherans as liking big voiced choristers. So I am a choir member and featured soloist there. I also made a nice circle of friends: women my age who are politically progressive but not "hippie-ish" like a lot of the Unitarians which set my teeth on edge. These women like classical music and don't use profanity. But many of them did march in the various women's marches for example and some do a lot of work helping undocumented immigrants. This church has a second, Spanish language congregation. I am currently learning Spanish and I tutor some of the Spanish speaking children.
